Zoo Animals ActivityThis lesson is aimed at practicing "there is" and "there are" along with an object and a preposition to identify it's location.
First, the teacher reviews and goes through the necessary vocabulary necessary to successfully do the activity. Then, will show an example picture (see below) and ask "Is there/Are there" questions according to the picture. It's important to do four total questions. Two for "Is" and two for "Are" with having a "yes and no" response for each one. One key point to emphasize for this activity is when the students are asking the "Is there" question, it needs to "Is there one" not "Is there a." This is because if they ask the latter, the response is always yes. |
Place the students in partners and give one student a card without a box on the bottom and the other student the card with the box. They will also need a little white board marker because these cards are laminated. The student with the card with the box on the bottom will be asking the questions. They will find number one in the picture and ask the designated question based on what they see next to number one. Eg. "Is there one koala on the house?" The other student will look at their card and answer appropriately. If the answer is "no," the student needs to record that in the blank box next to number one by writing the number of animals that are on their partner's card. (Their partner needs to tell them how many. Eg. "No, there isn't, There are four koalas on the house.") If the answer is "yes," they need to write "same" next to the blank number.

Assessing UnderstandingAs the students are doing the activity the teacher can walk around and listen to the conversation and see which students are struggling or not. One pronunciation mistake to keep an eye out for is "there." Many students will say, "they."
After each group of students have finished two sets of the cards. One for asking and one for answering, this worksheet will be given to them to assess their reading comprehension from the activity. They need to read the question and answer it appropriately. If the answer is "no," they need to write the correction for it. This worksheet lets you know they know their animals, prepositions, and nouns used placement of the animals. |
