Head School for the FET Program

Guo An is located in the Xitun district of Taichung city and is the Head School of the Foreign English Teacher program. Principal Hsieh and Director Liao will be responsible for collecting data from our schools and assessing the work that we complete as part of our Professional Development Program. This data will then be used to calculate our final score which is used to determine our annual bonus.

Orientation Sessions - August/September 2022

Due to the pandemic it has once again been very difficult to plan our orientation sessions for this school year.

Teach Taiwan and the coordinator team have therefore put together a short program that we hope will allow new teachers to gain an understanding of  the education system and what it is like to work as an English teacher in Taiwan.
Note that some of the sessions will be held LIVE using Google Meet, some sessions will be pre-recorded, and the session on September 21st will be 'in-person'.

Professional Development - Monthly Meetings

In preparation for the anticipated combination of Taichung's (summer and winter) FET programs in school year 112年we will run the Professional Development Program in a slightly different way this year.

For the first semester PD program our 26 FETs will split into two groups.

1. New Teachers (FETs joining the program this year)
2. Veteran Teachers (FETs that were already in the program)

1. New Teachers will attend meetings with their local coordinator at his/her school and complete the 'Core Professional Development' Program. This short PD curriculum allows new teachers to quickly become acquainted with Taiwan's education system and how to use the English curriculum guidelines to design competence based lessons.
* Note that new FETs from the Taichung FET (winter) program will also join these sessions.

2. Veteran Teachers will attend meetings organized by the Head Schools of the winter FET Program.
* Note that experienced FETs from the Taichung (winter) program will also join these sessions.

Semester One - NEW TEACHERS: Monthly PD Meetings

Competence Oriented Lesson Design (Core Professional Development)
Each semester we are required to submit one competence-oriented lesson plan as part of our on-going professional development. The lesson should be designed using the curriculum guidelines as set out by the Ministry of Education.
The Professional Development meetings for the first semester will therefore focus on understanding the core competencies and curriculum standards and subsequently applying them into an objective led, competence based lesson.

Semester One - VETERAN TEACHERS - Monthly PD Meetings

Head School Suggested Topics (Extended Professional Development)
Veteran teachers should already have a sound knowledge of the English curriculum Guidelines and competence based lesson plan design and so the Head School will choose topics and speakers that will be more relevant for veteran teachers.
Veteran teachers will therefore join the Taichung (winter) Program team meeting that is closest to their school.
The four meeting locations across the city with topics are shown below.
Your PD coordinator will inform you which meeting you should attend.

Weekly Reflections

Picture
In order to keep communication up to date, all FETs are required to complete a weekly teaching reflection.
The reflection form is a requirement of the Head School and contributes 20% towards the FETs final performance score.

By completing the reflection form and submitting to your PD coordinator we aim to share good practice and also solve any problems if and when they arise.

The reflection form should be emailed to your coordinator by the end of the week (Friday 4pm).
The coordinator will then review the reflections and if there are any items that you would like to discuss then he/she will contact you before the end of the following Wednesday (4pm).
