Fluency Based Lessons
Picture
We believe that one of the best ways to improve a skill is to actually use it. Therefore, we are in the process of designing lessons that will allow our students to apply their current English knowledge in activities designed to allow them to think freely and use the language. These lessons will refer explicitly to the core competencies that can be found in the new 12 year curriculum and will be designed around 'real life' scenarios.

We are aware of the difficulties involved with these lessons due to the range of English ability within our classes. The materials that we are designing will therefore allow students to participate at their own level. In order to achieve this we believe it is vital that we incorporate other skills into these lessons. So, with our fluency based lessons, rather than focus on English grammar, our lesson objectives will be based around core literacies.

Core Competencies: Essential skills for the 21st Century Learner

Picture
The concept of core competencies in 12-Year Basic Education emphasizes lifelong learning.
These competences are divided into three broad dimensions, namely, spontaneity, communication and interaction, and social participation. Each dimension involves three items. Specifically, spontaneity entails physical and mental wellness and self-advancement; logical thinking and problem solving; and planning, execution, innovation and adaptation. Communication and interaction entails semiotics and expression; information and technology literacy and media literacy; and artistic appreciation and aesthetic literacy. Finally, social participation entails moral praxis and citizenship; interpersonal relationships and teamwork; and cultural and global understanding.
