How ManyStudents have many difficulties with how to make uncountable nouns countable by adding a unit to it. One thing that can trip them up is forgetting to pluralize the unit. This activity helps them practice just that as well as brining back the ever troublesome "there is/there are."
For the first part of the worksheet they will create as many sentences for the picture at the top of the page. Eg. There are two glasses of milk on the table." When they are finished I will write those on the board. Then go over how to write a question for that answer. Eg. "How many glasses of milk are there on the table?" Next they will write five questions for the five items in part B of the worksheet. |
How Many ActivityAfter they finish their questions, the students will then ask their partner the questions they have prepared. The partner will look at the picture at the bottom of their page and give them the answer. (How the teacher organizes and pairs up students is up to them. Worksheet 1 has Worksheet 2's answers and Worksheet 2 has Worksheet 1's answers) As answers are given, the students need to write in the space provided. They must be complete sentences.

Assessing UnderstandingThroughout each step of completing the worksheet, the teacher will walk around checking any errors or oversights. A common mistake with be with "there is/there are or pluralizing the unit. I suggest just pointing to the error and give the students a few moments to look at it and figure it out on their own. I find that most of them know and understand what the mistake is. As they complete the speaking and listening portion walk around and check for student's understanding of questions and answers.
