Family TreeThis activity is designed to help students practice the possessive "'s," the interrogative "who," and family member vocabulary.
As you can see from the family tree below, there are many possible family connections. For example, Leo can be someone's husband, father, son, or brother. The students use the question "Who is name's brother/sister/mother/etc.?" The familial relation they want to ask about is theirs to choose. |
Family Tree Information GapFor this activity, the students will work with a partner. Each student will have their own card. On the top of their card they have a completed family tree. On the bottom, they have an incomplete one with only one name. The answers for the missing names on the bottom are on the top of their partners card. Their goal is to fill in those missing names of the family. To do so, they need to ask the target question to their partner and their partner needs to appropriately answer the question. Eg. "Who is Tina's husband?"...."Tina's husband is Ray." or "Her husband is Ray." or "Ray is Tina's husband." or "Ray is her husband." As they get the answers, write them in the appropriate space in the family tree.

Assessing UnderstandingAs the students are doing the activity, the teacher should walk around and listen to them speaking. The most common mistake they make is the possessive "'s" in both he question and answer. Also check to make sure they have the correct names in the correct spaces. If not, this could indicate a misunderstanding of familial vocabulary.
At the end of the lesson give each student the half page worksheet. They are to use the family tree above to answer the questions. This will show they understand the vocabulary and the familial relations of the vocabulary. |
