Don't...
As the students enter the classroom they see this 'connect' activity on the PPT to engage them straight into today's content. I ask them how to say the signs in English which leads us into the title of the lesson "Don't...".
In this year's textbook the grammar focus is imperatives and requests and so the game has been designed to cover this point. However, it is worth noting that some textbooks focus on the grammar point of Don't (verb) "Don't run" and No (verb + ing) "No running".

During the activate phase of this lesson  we review the vocabulary and sentence patterns in the imperative form. Later, when the students play the game they will use the same sentences, but add the word 'please' to change it into a request.

I have also added a level of complexity by using three different prepositions which the students will need to think about as they play the game. Co-teachers should explain in L1 the grammar rules that determine how to decide which preposition to use.

Go Fish Game
This game is played in groups of four and follows the same rules as the popular game 'Go Fish'. Most Taiwanese students will know how to play as the same game in Taiwan is called '一本書' or 'one book'.
To participate, the students communicate with each other in English by reading the sentence on their card and inserting the correct preposition (in,on,at) as they do so.
The aim of the game is to collect a 'book' of four cards that are the same. The student with the most 'books' at the end is the winner.

Assessing Understanding
Picture
Although there is a worksheet that can be used for assessment, I prefer to use the PPT game 'BAAM!' which is a really exciting way to finish and sum up the lesson. Students are chosen at random using popsicle sticks and if they can answer the question on the PPT they get that amount of money for their team. If they cannot answer the question, they are allowed to ask for help, but subsequently only receive half of the money. The twist of the game is that there are some bombs hidden within the game. If their team find a bomb... they lose ALL their money!
