I grew up in a small town of around sixty thousand people in southwest Iowa. As a child, I had lots of free time to explore the nearby woods and countryside. This gave me a deep appreciation for the natural world and led me to a career in science education. I have a large extended family and this has given me a good understanding of social relations and community spirit.

I’ve been living in Taiwan for around eighteen years. Before coming to Taiwan I taught ESL in Japan for a year. This was my first overseas experience in Asia and a very eye-opening one. Prior to that, I served four years in the US Army. I completed a two-year overseas tour in Germany. While in Germany, I had the chance to travel around Europe. It was fascinating trying to find the roots of my culture. This experience sparked my interest in learning other languages. In Iowa, I worked as a tutor in all subjects and as a counselor at Iowa School for the Deaf. Many of the students had special needs because of learning disabilities.

I have a BA degree in Biology Secondary Education. I have also studied Chinese medicine and have a degree in Massage Therapy. I have also taken some master’s level courses in Special Education. My wife and I recently started performing live. I play guitar and sing, and my wife plays the drum. In my free time, I enjoy exercising and spending time with my family.

I am currently teaching in the lovely city of Taiping in Taichung at Chang Yi High School. My experience includes teaching English in various subjects to different age groups. These experiences have really opened my eyes as an educator. As a teacher at Chang Yi High School, I feel very lucky to have wonderful students and a very supportive staff and teachers. My main goal at the school is to develop listening and speaking skills using fun and interactive activities. The focus of this fall semester will be training students to use travel English, fostering interaction between international students and local students, as well as enhancing Global Learning and Awareness. The aim is for students to be able to engage a guest in meaningful conversation.
